27 January: Commemoration day for the Holocaust

by Annika Savelind

Today, 27th January, is the commemoration day for the Holocaust.

A really good book to read on this subject is:

”One-way trip with a return” by Cina Holmberg.

Cina Holmberg lives in Sweden and here is what she writes about in her autobiographical book:

“My name is Cina Holmberg. I am one of the survivors of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. I would like to tell you what I saw and experienced there.

I was sixteen when my family and I were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau. My mother, father and grandmother disappeared there. The fact that they really were gassed to death, burned and strewn as ashes on the camp´s fields was for a long time, difficult for me to accept.

On one of the final days of the war I stood lined up with other prisoners, in a forest grove. Nazi soldiers with rifles raised were awaiting the order to fire when a motorcyclist from the Swedish Red Cross sped up to the officer and halted the execution.

My wish is that my story will be passed on. No one should be able to convince future generations that the Holocaust never took place.”

I have read this book myself and for my children. I really recommend reading this heartrending story. This book is really good to get an understanding and empathy for other people and above all to be grateful.
