Bullriding in the largest Cowboy Church in America

After several years of hearing stories about the different cowboy churches in America, I got the chance to visit one today, together with a team from Kingdom Center in Sweden. We went to "Cowboy Church of Ellis County" - a cowboy church south of Dallas that has grown rapidly from a few hundred to 3 000 members in just a few years. One of the tools they use to reach out to people is a weekly bullriding competition and they have seen many people give their lives to Jesus for the first time on these events.

As we arrived at the arena, the bulls, horses and sheep were on their way in. The people also started coming, all of them dressed in the trademark boots and cowboy hats to be a part of this exciting bullriding event. All in all around 200 people came.

They started the evening with prayer. Everyone took off their hats, bowed their heads and prayed to God to protect and guide them. They then gave a chance for the younger kids to try to ride sheep. Gideon Segerliv, 6 years old and the youngest in our team from Sweden, was the first cowboy out in the arena. He had been preparing for this ride for a long time and stood ready with a safety helmet on his head. He got on the sheep...and what a ride! After a long ride he fell off, rose up and walked proudly back out of the arena while the audience cheered him on!

When the small kids had finished their rides the older kids started riding steers. Some of them managed to stay on the steers for eight seconds – and some fell off before.

Time for a break and Frank Sanches went into the arena and preached a simple message about Jesus. Jesus, the one that paid the price for our sins. The one that has power, joy and wisdom when we don't. Everyone came down to the arena, went down on their knees and prayed a prayer together. After the prayer they handed out pizza and drinks.

The real bullriders started to get ready and then the bullriding got started. What an evening!

It's wonderful to see what God is doing among cowboys around the US. Churches are getting started and churces are growing!
