During the Church Shift
conference in Ukraine, Co-Chair James O Davis told the story of his
meeting with Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb the Mount
Everest. Davis first heard of Sir Edmund Hillary at the age of 27.
Many years later he contacted Sir Edmund's secretary to say that if he
could only get 15 minutes of Sir Edmund's time he would get on a plane
from USA to New Zealand. Sir Edmund agreed and Davis got on a plane.
When they sat down together in Sir Edmunds house, Sir Edmund told the
story about how he climbed the Everest.
In 1982 he tried to climb to the top and didn't make it. Coming back down he held a press conference. The gathered press ridiculed him for even thinking that he would be able to make it to the top. They said that it's not physically possible for a human being to ever climb to the top. Sir Edmund brought a big picture of Mount Everest and told the press to look at it.
He said; Mount Everest is never going to be any bigger than it is today, but the said, Edmund Hillary has not stopped growing yet, I will become bigger in my heart than Mount Everest is on the earth. He said that in a year from today I will stand on the top of Mount Everest and hoist high the British flag, and exactly one year later he actually did.
After hearing the story, James Davis asked him a question; How can I choose a project to for my life, how can I know if the project is worth my attention. Sir Edmund said; James if you only do what others have already done you will only feel what others have already felt. But if you do something that none has ever done you will have a satisfaction that none has ever had. If the project you choose for your life doesn't contain a bit of fear, you will get bored of it and never finish it. |
